Two Poems by the 15th generation ancestor

Harvard-Yenching Library at Harvard University has eight volumes of 《续冈州遗稿》(Xu Gangzhou yi gao) compiled by 言良钰 (Yan Liangyu) during the Qing Dynasty. It was published in the 松溪精舍正文堂 (Song xi jing she ; Zheng wen tang) in the 22nd year of the 道光 Daoguang Emperor (1842) . The collection contains 1,423 poems in various styles by 118 poets from 新会 (Xinhui) from the early Qing Dynasty to the 道光 Daoguang period.

note 1: Yan Liangyu(言良鈺), a native of Changshu(常熟), Jiangsu Province(江苏), served as the magistrate(知县) of Xinhui County(新会县) in the 20th year of the Qing Dynasty's Daoguang(道光) reign (1840).

In Volume Six of《续冈州遗稿》there are two poems by the 15th generation ancestor 黄显章

黄显章，字朴亭，天河人。乾隆戊申（1788年）举人，嘉庆丙辰（1796年）进士，官潮州府教授。有《秀水山房集》。

黄显章, with the courtesy name 朴亭, was born in 天河 (Tianhe). He passed the imperial examination at the provincial level 举人 in 1788 (乾隆戊申, Qianlong reign, year of Earth-Monkey) and at the metropolitan level 进士 in 1796 (嘉庆丙辰, Jiaqing reign, year of Fire-Dragon), and served as 潮州府教授 a professor in Chaozhou Prefecture. He is known for his collection of poems called 《秀水山房集》.

《甲寅（1794年）十二月二十四日佛山解缆二十五晚阻沙步罗怀之同年韵》

万里征人笑转蓬，

禅山初度雨微濛。

满胸幽绪凭谁诉，

孤枕寒灯一夜中。

《Written in the style of 同年韵（Tong Nian Yun）,on the evening of the 25th day after unmooring from 佛山 Foshan on December 24th of 甲寅 Jia Yin (1794)》

Laugh it off wandering all one's life as I set out on this long journey,

The first rain in Foshan falls ever so lightly.

Who can I confide in with my melancholy thoughts,

As I spend a lonely night with a cold lamp by my pillow.

《早过中宿峡》

峭壁双峰立，中流一水通。

寒云迷古寺，残月挂长空。

山鸟依林静，春花映日红。

轻舟移櫂去，逸兴与谁同。

《Passing Through Zhongsu Gorge in the Morning》

Twin peaks stand tall on steep cliffs,

With a river flowing between.

Cold clouds obscure an ancient temple,

A waning moon hangs in the vast sky.

Birds of the mountains settle in the tranquil forest,

Spring flowers bloom brightly under the sun.

A light boat rows away with oars,

Whose carefree spirit is the same as mine?
